I found Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Wonka more creepy than funny
The visuals were pretty good though (the squirrel scene was especially impressive, mostly since I knew going in that they were actual trained squirrels)
Burton was pretty faithful to the book (like the songs and stuff), which I thought was nice
The Oompa Loompa guy was awesome
The problem with doing remakes and movies based on popular books is that you have to add some extra flavor in order not to bore fans of the original, and in this case, it was a made-up backstory involving Wonka’s daddy issues, which I thought was completely superfluous and useless
Sort of off-topic, but I saw the teaser for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and I’m totally excited (seriously, those kids are jailbait – Harry’s a hottie, Hermione’s a sexpot, and Ron’s a rockstar. Really)
Dude, Helena Bonham Carter is in all of Tim Burton’s movies. I bet she’s sleeping with him. Oh yeah, they’re married. Still…
Synopsis: A poor boy (Freddie Highmore) gets to take a tour of a magnificent chocolate factory run by an eccentric Michael Jackson lookalike (Johnny Depp).
I agree with you. The visuals were great and, I guess you’d call it, very whimsical. Depp is more creepy than cool. (Gene Wilder is much better) And Harry Potter looks awesome.
Amy
I actually liked it a lot (minus the father backstory).

Dude, the oompa loompa guy’s name is Deep Roy.

I think all the Harry Potter kids look pretty weird in the upcoming movie…. but that’s just me. :P
Shetu
I loved Charlie. Except the chocolate dot on Prince Pondicherry’s forehead was a really cheap joke.
Harry and Ron need to cut their hair.
Daniel
It was perfect. Christopher Lee made the backstory a triumph. Johnny was exquisite as a child who never grew up.
Set, sound, acting, script, it’s the complete Burton package. 5 cookies from me.
