It was sort of unconventional in that it looks like a romantic comedy but it centers around neither the romance nor the comedy
Also, most films end up either indirectly or blatantly worshipping young hot successful people, and this one showed that the older generations still have value
It was still kind of Hollywood, though (sterile-looking New York office, occasional bad dialogue, etc.)
I think Topher Grace has a good eye for scripts; he knows he’s not your typical leading man, but still has a sort of offbeat charm and good comic timing
(I thought his character was kind of an ass, though)
Am I the only person who doesn’t think Scarlett Johansson is undeserving of It Girl status? Her character in this movie was totally flat and uninteresting
Synopsis: Dan Foreman (Dennis Quaid) is a successful guy, both at the workplace and at home, and it's all gravy, until he is replaced at work by ambitious twenty-something Carter Duryea (Topher Grace).
I’m not trying to praise Scarlett Johansson or her acting in this movie in any way, but I thought it was important that her character be a little uninteresting. You see, every movie with romance in it usually has the main characters ending up together because OHMY! it’s a movie and they just have to BE TOGETHER, no matter what. This annoys me. So I’m glad that they didn’t end up together. Just because you have a somewhat-significant experience with someone you’re dating doesn’t mean that they’re THE ONE, y’know?

emma, that’s a really good point. one of the things i liked about this movie is that it doesn’t hinge upon topher and scarlett being each other’s soul mates and dennis quaid learning some lesson about how he’s not a young buck anymore, which is what i thought it would be.
I agree about Scarlett Johansson’s character, but I think she’s great…I just disliked her character in this movie. And her and Topher Grace have zero chemistry.
Wendy
I agree about Scarlett Johansson. People think she’s such a big deal, but I see nothing really interesting or exceptional about her.
Danny
Ack… I love Scarlett Johansson. But I haven’t seen this movie. And also, she’s hot.

i totally fell in love with this movie. the movie is not your typical romantic comedy, but it’s doesn’t exactly have a sad ending.
