I just tried to type ‘burritos’ and it came out ‘buttiros’.
Tomorrow is
Sadly, those are listed in order of relative importance. It’s funny that birthdays are like anything else—the more of them you have, the less exciting each one becomes.
My last five birthdays:
I’ve never really been one for celebrating my birthday. I mean, the real growing happens between birthdays, not on them. The birthdays themselves just seem like a reminder of all the things I haven’t done.
(Shit, man, where do I come up with this crock? ‘The more birthdays you have, the less exciting each one becomes’? ‘The real growing happens between birthdays’? I should work for The Depressing Hallmark Card company.)
Anyway. Twenty-three hours to enjoy the twenty-fourth anniversary of me.
P.S. How old are you? When is your birthday? What was your favorite birthday memory/gift? (I am 23-going-on-24, my birthday is March 9th, and I had a glorious rollerskating party when I was 11.)
Shetu
I’m 24, my birthday is Jan 8 and on my 7th birthday I slapped my cousin across the face because she blew out the candles on my cake.
(That was definitely not my favourite birthday, but it’s the most memorable!)
Jamie
Happy Birthday! I just turned 24. My birthday is March 2nd. My favorite birthday memory is probably a birthday party I had when I was in grade school. We danced around my living room to pump up the jam!
Kiera
I’m 23. I turn 24 August 1st.
I actually have two birthday memories that are embedded in my heart.
My sweet 16th, that was spent with my mom’s side of the family. It was the family closeness/goofiness that made it so fun and memorable. I was the complete center of attention and it was the only time I ever enjoyed every minute of it. Plus, turning 16 was a big deal at the time.
My second memory was the last birthday I celebrated with my dad before he died. Damnit, I miss him. =[
And finally Happy 24th! :D
Sarai
Happy birthday! Birthdays are just another day in the year for me, really. I’m 20 years old, my birthday is on June 19th, and my favorite birthday gift was a CD. It’s lame.
kayti
i am 21-going-on-22, my birthday is april 18th and the year my brother moved away (aka, when i was eight) he came home from university just for my birthday. because i made him promise. because i was almost positive the world was going to end with out him. and mostly because he felt guilty as i made him thank you cards saying things like ‘thanks for a great 8 years’ and then bawled fantastically on his bedspread. this would be the last time i have seen my brother on my birthday.
also: he brought me a nerf bow and arrow. sweet.
ps. you have the same birthday as my father gasp
Jane
I turned 27 3 days ago. It was one of my favorite birthdays. My boyfriend presented all of my presents to me via haiku.
Leslie
Happy Rachel Day, Rachel! Isn’t the Depressing Hallmark division in charge of the Valentine’s Day cards? At least to me it seems so.
I turned 23 on January 29. I don’t have a favorite birthday because I’m grumpy that I have to share MY birthday cake. It’s my cake, I can eat it all if I want to!
Wendy
Happy birthday! I hope you enjoy the last year before turning a quarter of a century old! ;)
Danielle
I’m 22 as of March 3rd. (March birthdays rock! Except not really. They’re okay I suppose.) I had a poor outlook of the birthday idea for quite a period of time (and am often reminded what a petulant idiot I was for it by my friends) now I see it as an opportunity for my friends to eat cake and relax – that’s been working out much better for me.
When I was sixteen my tech theater friends managed to throw me a surprise party. I had forgotten about that.
Emma
I hope you have the same phone number, because I just sent you a happy birthday text.

happy 24th =)
i’m 23 – i just read over your past birthday entries and found out on two of your birthdays, i mentioned were four months older than me.
favorite bday: 13th – i discovered that day how cool or uncool i really was. i had a sleepover and invited all of my friends who’d already turned 13. i received a sega saturn that day from my parents and none of my friends wanted to play. their loss. it was probably the best time i had glued to the tube and dude, “Nights” was the coolest, most pointless game ever!
Eunice
Happy birthday, you old fart.
I’m twenty right now, and my birthday’s on August 17. My favourite birthday had to be my twelfth one, right before I moved to Toronto; I invited pretty much my whole sixth grade class, and my mom’s bosses let her rent out the restaurant she worked for. We had dinner (with deep fried mandoo, which was a hit) and a dance.
ari
happy birthday, rachel!
i turned 25 on january 6. favourite birthday memory: mcdonald’s birthday parties.
Lauren
Happy Belated Birthday!!!
I’m 21 and imagine that it is all downhill from here (until I can rent a car, that is – whoopee!)
My birthday is October 28th, and the best birthday I’ve ever had was my 18th birthday. My boyfriend flew out from California (his 21st birthday was 2 days later), and it was just alot of fun.
Marianne
Happy birthday RJK!
I turned 22 last 8/29 and went karaoke-ing with some friends. I’m pretty sure I dominated the Journey songs.
Jessica
Happy Birthday! I agree with both of your depressing hallmark sentiments, though. I just turned 19 on February 14th, and it was just another day. Having your birthday on valentine’s day is only fun in theory (ok maybe if you have a boyfriend or you’re a little kid).
My favourite memory/birthday was my 14th when my friends had 27 hart-shaped helium balloons delivered to my homeroom.
Marianne
Oh also: I was reading Elyse Sewell’s blog and saw a picture she took in Seoul. Tell me this girl does not look a tad bit like you. Or maybe I think all Asian people look the same.
alexis
happy birthday bitch! mine is sunday.
go pisces.
alexis
oh yeah, ahem- i’m 22. my bday is march 16th (sunday sunday sunday)
my favorite memory is last year when i went to a strip club. it sounds trashy, but what a memory!
Stine K.
I’m 23, and I turn 24 in October.
When I turned 23, I had a ‘kiddie-party’ – just for the hell of it. Home-made pizzas and a home-made Hello Kitty cake. It was the first time since I turned 10 that I actually enjoyed the day, and the celebration.
(I haven’t celebrated that day beyond getting to choose what’s for dinner at my parents’ house, and perhaps a slice of cake, since I was 12.)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! :D
Rach
Happy birthday for yesterday. Hope it was kickin’!
gally
we wish you a merry… err, wait, no.
anyway, lots of good shiny pretty things to you for the year(s) to come!
i’m turning 24 on the 23rd… the angst, i’m still plain old me. actually no, i did start learning how to skate-board this weekend so i guess i did do something new and interesting this year (pfiuuu, ‘bout time). and i did discover this blog which (that?) amuses me to no end (you’re so deep how do you do that??)
oh right, best bday memory? errr, i usually don’t do much and i can’t remember kids parties. so i guess when i was 13 or 14 and went iceskating with friends was nice and fun. last year a friend came by and we had japanese food. vinegar rice and salmon sashimi, i’m still drooling thinking about it.
Rachel
Happy Birthday! ...yesterday?
(Side note: Leah, Richie, and I were sitting around a table discussing you yesterday. There was a lot of, “omg, she’s so awesome,” and “what a badass.”)
Rachel
Kayti: Maybe I AM your father!
Emma: Yep, I got it. Thanks!
Euni: Mandoo (haha that looks funny anglicized. It’s like MAN POOP!) is always a big hit! Last year for my birthday I had a house party and I had a plate of mandoo that my mom had made and a plate of Trader Joe’s dumplings and no one even touched the TJ’s!
Marianne: ‘Just a small-town girl…’
Rachel: No you weren’t! Shut up! Aww. Too bad there’s no Mid-by-Midwest so you can all come to Chicago. Well, you should come to Chicago anyway. ‘Cause it’s cool. You might even call it ‘the windy city’. That’s a little nickname I made up for it. Um, yeah.
Everyone else: Yeah, I feel like a tit when I respond to some comments and not others. Thanks for the happy wishes and birthday stories!
Jennifer
Oh yeah if you type “años” without the tilde to just “anos” it means anus. So happy cum and anos! :)
momo
