I’m going to Paris in a couple of weeks. Any suggestions for sightseeing? Think family-friendly, as the mother and father units will be along as well (a blessing and a curse, if you ask me – they’ll pay for shit, which is good, but they’ll probably also annoy the hell out of me, which is… less good).

boy

The Pompidou!!!!! That is the ONLY thing worth seeing in all of France.

Besides that dumb tower and Notre Dame.

Ooh! I actually went with my family to Paris for spring break this year (there are zillions of photos at my website)... it was fantastic. You’ll love it. If you’re into art, I would obviously recommend the Louvre, D’Orsay, Rodin, Pompidou… you can get a pass to all the museums from any tourism center that’ll save you loads if you plan to spend time in museums… personally, I felt like the Eiffel Tower was a huge waste of time, but if it’s a clear day, maybe it would be more fun… Notre Dame is also really beautiful… and whatever you do, make sure you go for a long walk around the city at night, particularly if it’s rained that day. The city’s absolutely gorgeous at night, and when it’s wet, the cobblestones are all shiny and reflect all the building lights… it’s AMAZING.

the best part about the eiffel is the view from the top; you can take some nice panoramic pictures up there…

the van gogh museum is great too {provided you like vg}

try & take a boat ride down the seine, they do guided tours & point out all the good stuff

i took a trip to paris with my family last spring as well. definitely visit all those museums (especially pompidou, louvre, orsay). pompidou has some really awesome stuff, and louvre has the mona lisa and this painting of women pinching each other’s nipples. that’s what i went for, anyway. the champs-elysees was really crowded when i went, but it has some nice cafes and such.

nicole

also, versailles isn’t really worth it unless you’re REALLY into walking through antique rooms all day.

eva

if you want to shell out like 4 euros, you can go to the top of the arc de triomphe, and the view from up there is amazing. other than all the museums, that’s what i would recommend.

(and i liked versailles, but i’m also a history major.)

Em, well don’t do what I did and take barely any photos, all of which are stoopid: http://www.mikechalmers.co.uk/mike/2005/paris/

I had a really good video that I edited and stuff but it’s long gone.. Maybe I will find it sometime.

Have fun, I will be very near you (in comparison..), in Barcelona!

Best thing about Paris? THE FOOD!
Go check out Fauchon for excellent food.

I’m so excited for you! Some things others haven’t mentioned: Montmartre, Latin Quarter, Le Marais. Have coffee at Deux Magots or Cafe de Flore. Have you read Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast? He frequented both those cafes, and also Brasserie Lipp (across the street). I thought that was neat. Oh if you have time, there’s a park in the 19th(?) called Parc des Buttes Chaumont, which is, I think, the most beautiful park in Paris. Pere Lachaise! Lots and lots of famous dead folks. Luxembourg gardens is always a favorite. Make sure to see the eiffel tower at the top of the hour at night so you can see it sparkle. I could go on and on.

barron

eat lots! I loved those sandwiches with that spicy red sausage and they dump a bunch of pomme frite on top. And the little pizzas with the egg on top. And have cous cous if you are near… latin quarter? around St Michel st… memory is hazy!

Definitely the D’Orsay and the Pompidou. The whole district around the Pompidou is a lot fun. If you have time, you should check out at film at Les Halles which is a pretty nifty shopping center near the Pomp.

The distric near the Opera House is also really nice. Montematre which is near the red light district (haha…I’ve stayed in that district before. It’s not as bad as one might think.) is too touristy, but you should still check out Sacre Coeur.

Paris is just a wonderful city to get lost in.
